Twilio and TimelinesAI can both put your business on the official WhatsApp Business API. What you get after that is very different.
Twilio is a developer platform. You get APIs and webhooks, and your developers write the code that sends, receives and stores messages. TimelinesAI is a WhatsApp workspace for sales and support teams: the official WhatsApp Business API comes with a shared inbox, CRM sync and automation already built.
This comparison covers setup, pricing and day-to-day work, including the cases where Twilio is the better choice.
The short answer
Choose Twilio if:
- you are building WhatsApp messaging into your own app or product
- you want WhatsApp, SMS, voice and email from one vendor
- you have developers to build and maintain the integration
Choose TimelinesAI if:
- your sales or support team answers WhatsApp chats themselves
- you want every conversation synced to your CRM without writing code
- you want the official API and your team's existing WhatsApp numbers in one workspace

What Twilio gives you
With Twilio, WhatsApp is one channel of the Programmable Messaging API. You register a WhatsApp sender through Self Sign-up in the Twilio Console, which links your Meta Business Portfolio. From there:
- your application sends messages through the API
- incoming messages arrive as webhooks at a URL your developers host
- templates are created in Twilio's Content Template Builder and submitted to Meta for approval
- storing conversations, routing them to people and syncing them to a CRM is work you build, or buy separately
Twilio's own sign-up guide asks you to delete the WhatsApp account on a number before registering it, so a number can't keep running in the WhatsApp Business App on the standard flow.
For an agent workspace, Twilio sells Flex, a separate contact center product. According to Twilio's pricing page in September 2026, it starts at $150 per named user a month or $1 per active user hour.
What TimelinesAI gives you
TimelinesAI starts from the team's side. You connect WhatsApp numbers to one workspace, and conversations land in a shared inbox where chats can be assigned, labeled and filtered.
There are three ways to connect a number, and you can mix them in one workspace:
- Official WhatsApp Business API: set up through Meta Embedded Signup on a guided call with our team.
- Coexistence: an eligible WhatsApp Business App number keeps working on the phone while the same number is connected to the API.
- QR connection: a personal or WhatsApp Business App number connects by scanning a QR code. This is not the official API, so Meta's anti-spam rules for the regular apps apply.
Conversations sync to your CRM through native integrations with HubSpot, Pipedrive, Salesforce, Zoho, monday.com, Bitrix24, GoHighLevel and more. For custom workflows there is a Public API, webhooks, and native Zapier and Make integrations.
The WhatsApp Business API page compares the three connection types side by side.
Setting up the WhatsApp Business API
With Twilio:
- Create a Twilio account and register a WhatsApp sender with Self Sign-up.
- Link your Meta Business Portfolio and complete Meta's business checks.
- Build the code that sends and receives messages, and host the webhook.
- Create templates and wait for Meta's approval.
- Build or buy the tools your team will work in.
With TimelinesAI:
- Book a call with our WhatsApp Business API team.
- We check the number's eligibility with you and run Meta Embedded Signup together.
- Your team replies from the shared inbox, and chats sync to the CRM you already use.
Meta's checks apply either way and can add steps. Neither Twilio nor TimelinesAI controls Meta's approval.
What it costs
On both platforms, Meta charges its own fees for template messages. They depend on the recipient's country and the message category. Replies inside the 24-hour customer service window don't need a template.
The difference is what sits on top of Meta's fees.
Twilio charges $0.005 for every WhatsApp message, inbound or outbound, according to its pricing page in September 2026. A team that sends and receives 20,000 messages a month pays Twilio $100 before Meta's fees. Developer time, hosting, and any inbox or contact center product come on top.
TimelinesAI includes the WhatsApp Business API connection in your plan, with no separate platform fee and no per-message markup. Plans are priced per seat, from $25 to $60 a month, with up to 20% off on annual billing. See TimelinesAI pricing for what each plan includes.
For automated notifications that nobody on your team reads, Twilio's usage pricing is usually cheaper. When people handle the conversations, per-seat pricing is easier to predict.
When Twilio is the better choice
Twilio is the stronger option when:
- WhatsApp is a feature inside your own product, such as order updates or reminders sent by your app
- you send one-time passwords, alerts or notifications at high volume and nobody reads the replies
- you want one vendor for WhatsApp, SMS, voice and email
- your engineers want full control over the data model and the interface
When TimelinesAI is the better choice
TimelinesAI fits when people, not code, handle the conversations:
- sales reps and support agents reply to, assign and follow up on WhatsApp chats
- every conversation should reach your CRM automatically
- part of your team works from existing WhatsApp numbers, and you want the official API alongside them
- you don't have developers to spare, or you don't want to maintain a custom integration
Can you use both?
Yes. Some companies keep Twilio for automated messages sent by their product and use TimelinesAI for the conversations their team handles. A phone number can only be connected to one WhatsApp Business API account at a time, so each tool runs on its own number.
Frequently asked questions
Is TimelinesAI an alternative to Twilio for WhatsApp?
For teams that handle WhatsApp conversations themselves, yes. TimelinesAI connects to the official WhatsApp Business API and adds a shared inbox and CRM sync, with no code. If you are building messaging into your own product, Twilio is the closer fit.
Does TimelinesAI use the official WhatsApp Business API?
Yes. The official API is set up through Meta Embedded Signup. TimelinesAI also supports Coexistence and QR connections, and you can use them in the same workspace.
Does TimelinesAI charge per message like Twilio?
No. The WhatsApp Business API connection is part of your TimelinesAI plan, with no per-message platform fee. Meta bills its own fees for template messages, as it does when you use Twilio.
Do I need a developer to use TimelinesAI?
No. Setup is guided, and the inbox and CRM integrations work without code. A Public API and webhooks are there if you want custom workflows.
Can I move my WhatsApp number from Twilio to TimelinesAI?
Talk to our team before you change anything. Whether and how a number can move depends on Meta's rules for that number, and we review it with you before setup.
